I thought I told you to come down to dinner!

Day 6:  Dinner

Mary Stewart is one of my favorite authors, partly because she describes things so they create marvelous pictures in my mind:  Alpine scenery, Greek ruins, food.  As an instance, here's one of my favorite literary dinners.  This passage from Madam, Will You Talk? is one of several descriptions of a meal that have stayed in my mind since I first read them in her books decades ago.  (Offhand, I can think of other memorable descriptions of food in My Brother Michael and The Ivy Tree and Touch Not the Cat).  I don't even like anchovies, but I would eat them if I could have this dinner.  Minus the wine.  And the kirsch.  And the coffee.  Okay, and the anchovies.

You know, I actually remember that food scene from "Madam." I believe there's also a dinner scene with deliciosities in "Wildfire at Midnight," isn't there?

I remember this scene too! I think the part that stood out the most to me was "a succulent golden-brown fowl bursting with truffles and flanked by tiny peas".

She really is great at descriptions. So vivid and alive!

oh, and the title! is it from Beauty and the Beast?

Yes, the title is from Beauty and the Beast. I'm a little surprised that more people don't try to identify the titles. They all come from movies or tv shows or books or songs or plays or other sources.

yeah, but I'm extremely unknowledgable (knowledgeless?) about these things. Just ask Jared. Although to be fair he quotes from shows like ... Family in a house that's full... Full House! That's the one. You know, 90s sitcoms I never watched, that sort of thing.

But I always give points for guessing the source of the title. And if you get enough points, there's a prize!
